Bob Dylan and the Band caught on primitive b&w half-inch open reel videotape at the Isle of Wight Festival on August 31, 1969.

The set list was heavy with songs from Nashville Skyline and John Wesley Harding. Allegedly this was shot by a friend of John Lennon and Ringo Starr (who can be seen in the audience here). This makes sense because a) only someone relatively wealthy would have had access to a half-inch open reel video-recorder at the time and b) whoever shot this was right up front. What got preserved for history was:

Birthday - Self Portrait 1942

The great painter Dorothea Tanning died a few days ago in her sleep at the age of 101. Tanning, who was married for thirty years to Surrealist Max Ernst, was herself part of a small cadre of female Surrealists (Frida Kahlo, Leonora Carrington, Kay Sage, Lee Miller, Maya Deren, Remedios Varo, and Leonor Fini) judged by history to be as equally interesting as their male counterparts.
Jerry Saltz, writing about Tanning today on Vulture:

In her memoir, we hear how she and Ernst fell in love while playing chess, how the two of them lived in Arizona before moving to France, of their double wedding with Man Ray and Juliet Browner, of her friendships with Picasso, Breton, Magritte (“sweet”), Duchamp, Tanguy, Truman Capote (“a neat little package of dynamite”), Orson Welles (“scowler”), Joseph Cornell (“the courtly love of the 13th century troubadours”), and how she designed sets and costumes for the great George Balanchine. Noting how pleased she was that Ernst never called her “wife,” she observes, “He was very sorry about that wife thing. I’m very much against the arrangement of procreation, at least for humans. If I could have designed it, it would be a tossup who gets pregnant, the man or woman. Boy, that would end rape for one thing. And ‘woman artist’? Disgusting.” She writes about being alone on a bus in Chicago and deciding, with no plans or place to live, to go on to New York. There she “ate curry powder sandwiches, took Hindu dancing, read the ‘Bhagavad-Gita’ and Emily Dickinson, impartially.” In 1936 she saw the MoMA show “Fantastic, Dada, and Surrealism” and recalled that “here, here in the museum ... are signposts so imperious, so laden, so seductive, and yes, so perverse that … they would possess me utterly.”

If you remember the sixities, this film looks up to date and contemporary and could have been filmed today. Maybe in London or New York or San Francisco. I kind of remember the sixties( I was about 3 when they started) but i was raised in Africa and the 'sixties' didn't exist as the country was so conservative and backward looking. Anything else was frowned upon and actively put down. But I remember the occasional movie starring David Hemimings as a groovy photographer in Blow Up directed by Michelangelo Antonioni. Even at the ripe old age of 8 I was turned on by the London fashion and movies and music much to the chagrin of friends and parents and teachers.

Looking like an advert for Swinging London, Joe Massot’s 1965 short Reflections on Love mixes pop documentary with scenes devised by writer Derek Marlowe. Though everything looks rather beautiful, it is such a terribly straight film, and considering the talent involved, and doesn’t really offer much love for the audience to reflect on. Then, this was the Sixties, when everything was new and exciting, and getting hitched in a registry office was daring and rad. O, how innocent it all seems. Massot went on to direct George Harrison’s Wonderwall and later, Led Zeppelin’s concert film The Song Remains the Same. Kramer went on to script Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush (1967), and Ken Russell’s Women in Love (1969), before writing his novel Faggots in 1978.

This short is still watchable pop candy.

The original version was twenty-one minutes long, and this is the revamped, re-scored (by Kula Shaker), re-edited (12 minutes) re-release from 1999

15 tons of pure methamphetamine worth $4 billion were seized yesterday at a ranch outside of Guadalajara in the Mexican state of Jalisco.
The superlabs in Mexico are operating on a scale that is mindboggling. This haul alone was enough meth to get 13 million people wired to the gills.

The size of the Jalisco bust stunned Steve Preisler, an industrial chemist who wrote the book “Secrets of Methamphetamine Manufacture” and is sometimes called the father of modern meth-making.
“I have never seen quantity in that range,” Preisler wrote. But he added: “The amounts of precursors they were importing would produce multi-tons of product.”
Preisler was referring to the dramatic increase in seizures in Mexico of chemicals used to make methamphetamine, usually imported from countries such as China.
In December alone, Mexican authorities seized 675 tons of a key precursor chemical, methylamine, that can yield its weight in uncut meth. All of the shipments were headed for Guatemala, where the Sinaloa cartel is also active. Officials in Guatemala, meanwhile, seized 7,847 barrels of precursors in 2011, equivalent to about 1,600 tons.”

Guadalajara is the capital of the western state of Jalisco and has until recently been spared the horrible violence that plague other areas of Mexico. But in the past few years drug-related murders in Jalisco are an epidemic, with more than half of them in Guadalajara. Six gangs are fighting for control of Jalisco: the Sinaloa Cartel, the Jalisco Cartel New Generation (CJNG, for its initials in Spanish), the Resistance, the Caballeros Templarios, the Familia Michoacana, and the Beltran Leyva Organization.

Guadalajara, the vibrant cultural and economic heart of Mexico, is under assault and the “Pearl of the West” could literally be destroyed in the drug turf wars. With an economy built on the tech industry, Guadalajara is rapidly losing ground to China in the tech wars while China is the source for most of the methylamine that is used in the Mexican meth labs. As above ground industry falters and fades, business goes underground. This is what happens when crime does pay. Diabolical.

As is pointed out in the video below, the drug cartels are ramping up the production of meth because of the crackdown on marijuana farming in Mexico, which is another strong argument for the decriminalization of marijuana. What’s healthier, an economy built on primitive and toxic forms of meth production or one built on the ecologically sound and scientific cultivation of marijuana? And unlike computer chips and hard drives, China won’t be competitive in the ganja trade. Let China have the silicon, we’ll take the sativa.The best way to get the motherfucking gangsters out of the picture is to legalize all drugs, including methamphetamine, heroin and cocaine. Make it pure, make it available like alcohol and make it affordable. I know the notion of providing legal over-the-counter pharmaceutical quality meth for adults sounds potentially dicey but could things really get any worse?
By making methamphetamine legal, we eliminate the gangster trade. By making it clinically pure, we eliminate the toxic bathtub variety flooding the drug marketplace and significantly minimize the health risks. What do you think? Can society handle a culture of meth heads who buy pure crystal at the Tweak Boutique at Walgreens?

Sometimes, you need to start off your week with a dose of happy news. For instance, this video from the American Museum of Natural History details two recent instances where scientists have observed a whale and several dolphins interacting in ways that are something we might classify as "play".
It's hard to talk about animal behavior without getting too anthropomorphizing, but think about it this way: In both instances, the whale and dolphins did not appear to be competing with other, they did not appear to be fighting, nor were they cooperating in a goal-oriented way. When scientists say "animals are playing" they don't necessarily mean "play" the way human children play, but they do mean behaviors that go beyond simple eat/sleep/defend/breed necessities. Play might be learning. Play might be about forming social bonds that help an individual later on. And however you interpret it, spotting examples of spontaneous, inter-species play in the wild is kind of a big deal.

The first movement, “Des choses comme ça” (“Such things”) of Jean-Luc Godard’s 2010 film Socialism, was filmed on board the tragically ship-wrecked Costa Concordia, which ran aground off the coast of Isola del Giglio, on Janury 13. Pizzas like these. Why can't we get them like this here ? Because the tomato sauce must be perfect and the dough thin with a slight 'give' into a pocket of air when you bite into them (60 seconds in an oven of 860 degrees using beechwood and oak in a domed oven). But people demand stuff like pineapple and tuna and chicken and minced meat and other crap placed on top smothered in gooey melted cheese that attaches your mouth to your plate.

I think pizzas from Napoli are supreme because pizzas were invented there and the tomato sauce is just right. It is the New Yorkers who have bastardized the classic pizza by putting all that other stuff on top to suit local tastes it seems. Much like TexMex food. As long as everything is covered by lava fields of melted cheese in one form or another. The Romans do put sausage, spinach and asparagus and cheese up top but not to the extent that we find in the UK and the USA.

Good dough with air pockets, a spoon of tomato sauce, some garlic, a taste of Cetara anchovies and sprigs of basil. That's it. It should be street food. It was developed as street food.

Tumblr as we all know is a great blogging site if you want to paste images that catch your eye and relate what you feel at that time. Like pasting pictures on your bedroom wall. Young kids use Tumblr a lot. I was at boarding school so never had the opportunity to cover my bedroom wall with pictures but I suppose thinking back I would have had the classic Ché and Castro portraits, images of the worker's red flag and strikes, raised fists, police brutality, barbed wire and all that socialist and communist thinking stuff and ban the bomb and "the only good fast breeder is a rabbit" , Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Margot Fontaine (I was also into ballet).

I use Tumblr as an extension of my commercial photography website and many of my images I upload get reblogged many times so I sometimes follow them and come across some interesting places where they have appeared. And in my travels around Tumblr I gathered some material that appears a lot from Mexican youth.You can see their influences in music and politics and fashion. Narco corridas, Pancho Villa and his revolutionaries, rap, violence, guns, big hats, bouncing cars appear a lot.

This is an insane paen to everything that was glorious about cinema’s misrepresentation of punks. It’s basically every alarmist rumor about punk rock — not to mention just about every single convention of 70s exploitation film — rolled into a single representation: drugs, orgies, spitting, bad hair, Satanic rituals, murder, rape, loud music, makin’ faces at the squares, and with the addition of dune buggies and, for some reason that can only be “because it’s Mexico,” a luchadore. We begin with a line of nuns walking down the street to a bank, which they promptly rob. Because these aren’t nuns at all; these are the women of the titular intrepidos punks, amassing cash so they can buy weapons and drugs that will help them free the imprisoned male members of the gang.

The reveal of the female punks is perhaps the greatest transformation scene in cinema history, as they strip away their nun duds to reveal leather thongs, metal bikini tops, sequins, chains, lace, mesh, breasts, and all manner of candy colored punk rock hair. The leader is the sneering, snarling Beast, played by actress Princess Lea (obviously her real name), and the height of her platinum blonde hairdo defies all known physics. And though her hair and studded leather bikini may be one of the star attractions, my heart was immediately stolen by the girl with the choppy red hair and spider-web face paint. For me, the true stars of the film are the girl with the spiky red hair and spiderweb face paint and the guy with the bright red poodle perm mullet, Fu Manchu mustache, lazy sort of expression, and exceptionally proud posture.

She earned her first academy award for this movie. I don't remember it being a vampire movie though. I think I'll take another look at it as I must have missed this scene and the name of the movie in today's world sounds a tad dodgy.

Thank God I found these. Why, I am a very shy and bashful man and I imagine my social life is going to become unexpectedly full with these guaranteed Girl Getters. See, books have a life of their own and they are happy and I just offloaded about 50 books over at the library up the road and had a chat with the nice people who look after the place and it got me out the house. Books also give their owners a life and who knows what routes they will take within their own life until they fall apart or are recycled. My first big fat book I owned - Dune - followed me round the globe on my first backpacking trip till it eventually got thinner and thinner. I recycled it as toilet paper (starting from the front naturally) in an area of Africa where the proper stuff did not exist and I am grateful to the House Atreides and the desert Arrakis as a result. It's pages, sometimes when desperate for Rizlas, I used to roll around some ganja when I did that sort of thing. It didn't taste good but it did the job. Imagine trying to do all that with a Barnes and Noble thingy or the Amazon Kindle.

I sometime wonder at the alignment of The Mazatlán Woman as she's only holding her arms open to embrace the rich people living on the hill. It would interesting if her plinth were to be uprooted and placed on a revolving mechanism where she could slowly revolve spreading her welcoming arms to everything within 360 degrees.

We at MazReal however, have a dream that may realized, but probably not in our lifetime, that she could be duplicated and placed everywhere so no one misses out on her embrace. We could even place one or two in MoMa. This image illustrates what the future could be like for Olas Altas and what a bright future it looks. Imagine how our lives will be improved!
